I hope to see you at the march on Washington this Saturday. Look for my sign, which will read "BREAD AND ROSES."
As a protest banner, that ought to speak for itself, if you think about it. But you're a busy person, so here's some of what I think it means: we all deserve a good life. No one should lack basic needs ("bread") and more than that, everyone deserves joy ("roses"). You might say, "STEAK AND GOLD FAUCETS."
I'm not utopian. I can see many of the reasons why we don't already all have bread and roses. But when our country could bomb most of the planet on a day's notice, I refuse to believe it's impossible for us to keep people from starving. Just drop MREs instead of bombs. It would be cheaper and more effective.
Once we've taken care of the bread, the roses might take care of themselves.
